Optional Activities

This may be your first time to Big Sky Country, why not come a little early and take advantage of the rustic and beautiful surroundings by adding a few optional activities to your schedule. Explore the truly historic and majestic Yellowstone National Park. From buffalo to geysers - no one leaves Yellowstone disappointed. Float the iconic Gallatin River, known for several scenes from the movie "A River Runs Through It". Bring your hiking boots and set out on a beautiful hike. Close your day with a step back in time and enjoy an evening in the mountains with a 2-hour horseback ride and steak-fry.

Your "local" WETPOL Program committee has negotiated special rates for you to make the most out of this trip.

Yellowstone Tours

  • Lower Loop Adventure [$100 USD/person* | Aug. 19, 20 or 21 | Departs: 6am; Returns: 4pm] Yellowstone Tour Guides is Yellowstone’s premier tour company. Our 3 guides offer over 40 years of experience guiding in Yellowstone and are enthusiastic about learning more about the complexity of the greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, whether it is the volatile geology, the hot spring biology, the wildlife and their habits and the fascinating history.  Pick-up for the tour is 6 am at Big Sky Resort and you will return by 4 pm. The Lower Loop Adventure includes Old Faithful, Hayden Valley and the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone, elk, bison and more.  There is a maximum of six people August 19th, six people August 20th, and six people August 21st. $100 price per person.
  • Upper Loop Adventure [$100 USD/person* | Aug. 19 or 20 | Departs: 6am; Returns: 4pm] Yellowstone Tour Guides is Yellowstone’s premier tour company.   • Day Hiking Adventure [$100 USD/person* | Aug. 19 or 21 | Departs: 6am; Returns: 4pm] Yellowstone Tour Guides is Yellowstone’s premier tour company. Our 3 guides offer over 40 years of experience guiding in Yellowstone and are enthusiastic about learning more about the complexity of the greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, whether it is the volatile geology, the hot spring biology, the wildlife and their habits and the fascinating history.  Pick-up for the tour is 6 am at Big Sky Resort and you will return by 4 pm. Day Hiking Adventure traveling up to 3 hours to one of Yellowstone’s 96 trailheads for a 4-8 mile hike in the backcountry. Bear spray and instruction included.  There is a maximum of 6 people August 19th and 6 people August 21st. $100 price per person.

Whitewater Rafting

  • Full Day  [$81USD/person | August 19 | Departs: 8:30am; Returns: 5:30pm] Gallatin Whitewater. Spend the morning observing wildlife while floating by mountain meadows and spectacular rock outcroppings. You’ll run Snake Bite, Mother Eater and Portal Creek rapids. We’ll take a break to indulge in a delicious all you can eat lunch by the river. (Deli meats and cheeses provided to make your own hoagies + chips, cookies, soda, water). Let us know if you have any allergies or dietary restrictions so they can be accommodated. Enjoy an exhilarating afternoon rafting the lower canyon. Your trip may include the Mad Mile or not (depending on water levels and group ability). Without the Mad Mile, the trip is class I-III. Cost per person is $81 and includes lunch. Limited to 15 people August 19th. Signed release required. Departs Big Sky Resort at 8:30 am and returns around 5:30 pm.
  • Half Day  [$50USD/person | August 21 | Departs: 8:30am; Returns: 2pm] The classic half-day trip takes you through the heart of the wildest water on the Gallatin! You’ll begin with small rapids that progress in size until you are dropped into the lower canyon where you’ll conquer BIG rapids including House Rock and the Mad Mile, the longest stretch of whitewater in the region. The trip is about 3 hours but varies depending on water levels. Our office is located just minutes from the end of the trip – so you can get right back into dry clothes and get comfortable. Limited to 15 participants on August 21st. Cost is $50 per person and does not include lunch after the trip. Signed release required. Departs Big Sky Resort 8:30 am and returns by 2 pm.

Dinner & Horseback Ride

Dinner & Horseback Ride [$91USD/person | Aug. 20 | Departs: 3:30pm; Returns: approx. 8:00pm]  Saddle up for a trail ride in the Big Sky area. Jake’s Horses offers a dinner ride which includes a Steak Fry and two-hour ride through the woods to a special spot. Dinner includes steak, baked beans, corn on the cob, baked potato and a great salad. We roast marshmallows and cook it all over a campfire. $91 per person includes a meal. Limited to 10 people.  Departs Big Sky Resort at 3:30 pm, return approximately 8 pm. Maximum weight is 240, we cannot take pregnant women. Riding while intoxicated is not allowed. If horses scare you or you are fearful of riding or unwilling to control your horse please do not ride. Tense people are more apt to fall off. We recommend you wear long pants, closed-toed shoes and long sleeve shirts to protect from sun and bugs.

Tubing the Madison

Tubing the Madison [$20USD/person | Aug. 20 | Departs: 11:15am; Returns: 6:30pm]  Join us for a tubing trip and leave everything to us. We supply the tubes, life jackets and transportation to and from the river, allowing you to focus on having fun with friends and family. Come enjoy a relaxing and worry-free day on the water. The Madison is warm and mellow, making it popular for summer floats. Our trip leader, the shuttle driver, will hand out inflated, deluxe tubes and will help connect them, so groups can float together. At the end, our trip leader will collect the tubes and transport you back to your starting point. Signed release required. Departs Big Sky Resort at 11:15 am and returns about 6:30 pm. Limited to 15 participants on August 20th. $20 per person.
